Update on Privacy Regulations – California Consumer Privacy Act

The California Consumer Privacy Act was passed and signed into law last summer. It takes effect at the beginning of 2020. The law, as it now stands, overlaps somewhat with GDPR, but also has its own framework that contains a set of different rules and requirements – some of which are quiet stringent. Tech industry and marketing companies are seeking to weaken the law, and Congress may seek to preempt the Act with federal legislation, but so far it is not clear whether there will be changes. Some of my bigger clients are looking into what needs to be done to comply. California represents a big market – particularly for companies involved in e-commerce.
